Body Mind Collective is proud to announce that we have been awarded £2,952.50 from Parkinson’s UK, to deliver adapted yoga sessions for adults affected by Parkinson’s and other neurological disorders.

This funding will support six months of free weekly sessions which will take place at Murray Hall Community Trust in Tipton, starting Thursday 22 October at 11am.

The sessions will be adapted to the physical needs of the attendees, focusing on improving confidence in strength and balance, mobility and flexibility, with the safety of a chair. At the start of the course attendees will start seated, but as it progresses, they will work towards standing postures and balancing with some fall prevention work. There will be breathing practices to improve respiratory function, and mindfulness and relaxation for anxiety and depression. We will welcome carers and anyone impacted by Parkinson’s who will also benefit from attending the sessions.

There will be time built-in for refreshments and peer support. With no Parkinson’s nurse locally to signpost or support people, the sessions will also act as a point of connection, where newly diagnosed and isolated people can meet others and feel less alone.

Parkinson’s UK estimates that there are 640 people living with Parkinson’s in Sandwell, however there have previously been no dedicated physical activity groups. This brand-new activity from Body Mind Collective CIC will therefore directly target an underserved community.

Our previously funded sessions through Hateley Cross Big Local, and Commonwealth Active Communities Fund continue to be a success in West Bromwich and Oldbury. We anticipate that these sessions will continue long after the funded period and support people in Sandwell diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
